We understand that orthodontic emergencies occur. Here is what to do if any of the following common emergencies arise.
Pain
Following placement of braces or an adjustment, some mild pain is normal. This typically lasts one to three days. The use of medications for this discomfort is generally not required. However, there are some adjustments where the discomfort level is higher and medication may be helpful. Our recommendation is 800mg of Ibuprofen three times per day. Of course, if you are allergic to any medication or have any questions, please consult your physician. If pain persists beyond three days, please call the office for an appointment.
Loose brackets
Brackets and bands are held on the teeth with adhesives or cements. These materials can break if enough force is applied to them causing a loosening of the band or bracket. If the bracket is not causing pain or discomfort, you can wait until the next regularly scheduled appointment to have it addressed. If it is causing pain or if you have any questions, please call the office.
Shifting or broken arch wires
The arch wires are highly resistant to breakage, however, if they flex enough, they can shift or break. If an arch shifts or breaks, and there is no pain or discomfort, call the office at your convenience to schedule an appointment for its replacement. If the arch breaks or shifts, and it is causing pain, call the office for an immediate appointment. If it is during non-business hours, you can try fixing the wire by: (1) tucking the offending wire in with a non-sharp object such as a pencil eraser, or (2) placing orthodontic wax, which is available at all of our offices and most drug stores, over the rough area. If you don't have wax, you can substitute sugarless chewing gum. If either of these measures is ineffective, call one of the doctors at home. Discomfort associated with an expansion appliance
In certain orthodontic cases an expansion appliance may be used. If you are experiencing pain or excessive pressure, stop turning the appliance and call the office. If the discomfort persists, and you can not get in for an immediate appointment, you can reverse the turning process by inserting your expansion key in the back and turning forward. This can often lessen the problem until we can evaluate it. If you are having problems and need to confer with a doctor during non-business hours, the doctors can be reached at home. Lost appliances
If you lose your nightbrace, elastics, or retainer, please call the office to arrange for a replacement. There may be a charge for replacement appliances.
